In The Host’s Own Words

Your Hosts

Hello! We are Rebecca and Carole, two sisters building our quintessential home just north of Taos, New Mexico, in peaceful Questa.

Rebecca loves the look of old English cottages, the undulating walls, and the deep set windows. In addition, she appreciates that cob houses are strong and durable (the oldest cob house is over 10,000 years old!), built from sustainable materials, and are energy efficient. Carole appreciates the feel of straw bale homes. As a potter she loves the smell of clay, the feel of clay, the beauty of clay, it makes sense she would want to have a house made of straw and clay. They understand there is a quiet that exists inside that cannot be obtained in a traditional build. The thick walls, the deep window, and earthen floors provide a natural sanctuary. Like cob, straw bale homes are energy efficient, built from agricultural byproducts, and contain fewer toxins than conventional builds.

And, so the two of us began researching, which type of building would it be possible to do? After watching cob building and straw bale building, we realized that a straw bale would best fit our needs and abilities. Also, because Carole is the bossy older sister, she used her influence to convince Rebecca. :)

Once we made that decision, Carole began to attend straw bale building workshops. It was there she joined the community of straw bale people. And straw bale people are truly a community. Friendships that are formed at a workshop last for years. Tools are learnt, jokes and stories are shared, skills are learned and refined.

We are looking forward to building with each of you, whether you are a Straw Bale Workshop groupie or new to the whole thing. You will wake up in the morning to a beautiful sunrise and smell of pinon and sage. You will fall asleep to a waning moon and coyote howls.

I refer to Straw Bale Workshops as summer camp for adults. You will make memories to last your life. You will challenge yourself and come away braver, stronger and more knowledgeable than you thought possible. You might also come away with a bruise or a scrape, but those are the stories you get to tell people who did not come to camp!
— Carole

The Build

Attending two hands-on workshops plus a straw bale home design workshop was very helpful. We learned that neither of us had the skills to be the owner/builder. We found an architect who designed straw bale homes, and a builder who had built with straw bales. He is excited to learn how a workshop fits into his building process and has worked with Timbo and Dainella to fine-tune his understanding. Having experts in place greatly reduced our anxiety.

This process has taken many years. Again, it was community which helped us. A friend talked to a friend who gladly showed us around the area, and we found the piece of land that suited us. Once we bought the land, more friends were made. They walked around with us to find boundary markers. They answered emails about water, electricity, and excavators. They helped get the road named so we could begin filing paperwork with the county. Because this is New Mexico everything takes time (which is okay with us—as we also move at a slower pace). Community takes care of us.

Your Stay

We have been walking and dreaming on this land for some time now and that includes picking out choice campsites for all of you! There will be plenty of tent sites and room for a handful of RVs, as we’ve been clearing out the brush (Carole has learned to drive a dozer!) Our goal has been to preserve the natural beauty and flow of the land and vegetation while also being practical for living and wildfire safety.

One of our passions is baking, and we’ve been having fun picking out our favorite recipes to share with you. Cooking and sharing meals is a part of our family and community way, so we are really looking forward to this part of hosting our workshop.

North Central New Mexico and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND adding some extra space in your trip to explore this beautiful part of the United States! Taos County is rich in natural beauty, artisans, hot springs, outdoor adventures, steeped in history, natural building, and more. Below is a video on the local area, and check out this link to The Bureau of Land Management for recreational opportunities. If you want to hike check out this guide, Hiking Around Questa.

Want to spend time soaking in a natural spring after that hike? There are six to choose from. If art is your thing Taos and Santa Fe will certainly fulfill that niche as well.

For cultural and history buffs, Taos Pueblos are designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. Also, check out Another Time in This Place, a book, now out of print, with very interesting first-person accounts. And Questa Creative is a history trail full of interesting info from residents of El Rito and Questa.

Travel

Taos is our nearby ‘big town’ for groceries and hardware store runs, with our place being a beautiful ~30-minute drive North near Questa, NM. For those traveling by plane, the closest larger airports are in Santa Fe (SAF) and Albuquerque (ABQ) NM, with a a smaller regional airport in Taos itself. There are car rentals and shuttles/buses that come from the airports to Taos — Here’s a useful visitor information site to help you with travel planning. Taos is a popular destination, so we are lucky to have so many options!

If you are flying into Denver International Airport (DIA), there are also many car rental options, and it is about a 4.5 hr drive. There is always ridesharing at workshops that gets coordinated closer to the workshop date, so be sure to reach out to Dainella at info@strawbale.com if you have questions.

We are both looking forward to making new friends, seeing old familiar friends, and having a community build the home we want to live in for a very long time to come!
- Carole and Rebecca
