In The Host’s Own Words

Your Hosts

We are Amber, Adrian (also goes by AC), Robin, and Bill (Amber’s parents), and we’re excited to welcome you all to our home! We bought our place in 2016 after searching for somewhere with a more direct connection to the outdoors than our apartment in Seattle and room to explore getting some animals. We named our home Lone Frog Farm early in our first spring when the first Pacific chorus frog woke up for the year and began serenading us.

We originally intended to remodel the 1917 house on the property, but after some discoveries of ‘unique’ construction techniques and realizing that it would never be energy efficient or warm, we decided to build a new house. Amber has been interested in straw bale construction since she was 16, so we attended a straw bale workshop in 2019 and have been working on building our dream home ever since.

Throughout this endeavor, we have enjoyed the support of our close-knit community of nearby neighbors, friends, and family, with helpers ranging from 6 to 77 years old.

Since moving here, we’ve grown an ever-expanding garden and have flocks of chickens, sheep, and very friendly dairy goats who are due to have babies this spring!

The Build

Because it seemed ideal for our two-generation family, we purchased Strawbale.com’s “Bale Courtyard 2100” plan for a 2,100 square foot, two-wing house with a central courtyard and lots of natural light – to optimize enjoyment of our views and functionality of the solar hall. It also offers direct access to our garden and barn areas.

With much-appreciated help from friends and family, we started building in the spring of 2024. Our across-the-road neighbor and good friend owns a portable sawmill, which we will use for some interior wood finishing from local trees.

For photos and more detailed information about the project, see our Lone Frog Farm Blog (which we try to keep up-to-date).

Your Stay at Lone Frog Farm

We have a large flat area (formerly an outdoor riding arena) that will accommodate both tents and a number of camper vans. The large backyard of the original house is shaded and will serve as our gathering space for most meals. In the evenings you may want to hang out around the fire pit to watch the stars. Alternatively, there are a number of AirBnBs within a 15-minute drive.

We’ll have three hearty meals a day and plenty of snacks. We are happy to accommodate special food needs when possible, please let us know early so we have time to plan any changes needed for meals. Cooking and especially baking are a favorite pastime of Amber’s, so there will be plenty of sweets after meals!

Recreation options for before and after the workshop are abundant and include hundreds of miles of hiking trails, from the Van Zandt Dike (within sight of the house) to Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, the Chuckanut Mountains, and the unspoiled alpine landscapes of North Cascades National Park, which you can explore on your own or via programs at the renowned North Cascades Institute. There are also opportunities for mountain and road biking and water adventures (kayaking, paddle boarding, and whale watching, for starters).  Adjacent to Bellingham’s historic Fairhaven district, the Bellingham cruise terminal offers access to the fabulous Alaska Marine Highway System.

South Fork Valley

Van Zandt, Washington, is a former lumber camp in Whatcom County; it lies 20 miles east of the port city of Bellingham and 20 miles south of the Canada border. Less than a mile from the South Fork of the Nooksack River, our four-and-a-half-acre property nestles in a farming valley between Lake Whatcom and the North Cascade Mountains. From the building site, we look across the valley to see dramatic views of the Van Zandt Dike and the steep forested hills that surround it. Over the past century, Van Zandt has evolved from its sawmill origins into a community of farmers, artisans, and now – straw bale house builders.

Travel

We’re an easy 2-hour drive from Seattle and a half-hour each from Bellingham and the Canada border. If you’re coming from Canada, the closest border crossings are at Sumas (20.6 mi), Lynden (27.9 mi), and Blaine (37.0 mi). For those traveling by plane, the closest major airports are in Bellingham (BLI); Sea-Tac (SEA), south of Seattle; Paine Field (PAE), north of Seattle in Everett; and Vancouver, Canada (YVR). Bellair Airporter Shuttle makes at least nine daily round trips between Sea-Tac and Bellingham, with stops at Paine Field three times a day each way. Train and bus transportation are also available. QuickShuttle offers a more limited schedule of shuttles between Vancouver (airport pick up at River Rock Casino) and Bellingham airports, continuing on to Sea-Tac.

Train and bus transport are also options. FlixBus is a popular and often inexpensive way to travel to Bellingham. If you would like a ride from Bellingham or another nearby location, contact us after registering, and we can almost certainly make that happen.

We can’t wait to meet you all and share this adventure!
-Amber, Adrian, Robin, and Bill
